Is Woods's return bad for the PGA Tour?

From The Wall Street Journal: Tiger Woods is golf's moneymaker. The PGA Tour, CBS, Augusta National, everyone associated with the Masters is breathing a huge sigh of relief that Woods is returning for the year's first major. But Woods's return may be the worst possible thing for the PGA Tour in the long run. Certainly, hundreds of golfers can thank Tiger for driving up purses and making sure that even the relatively mediocre are living quite comfortably. But Woods's dominance is a clear sign of the superstar effect which causes opponents to concede, rather than rise to the occasion when...

Course of Style: Ryan Moore channels the Arnold Palmer look

Whatever you thought of his funky apparel, you had to respect Ryan Moore, that rare Tour pro who has eschewed apparel sponsorship in order to develop an individual style all his own. He tends toward skinny neckties and cardigans, like something out of a different era. Now Moore has signed an endorsement deal to wear the new Arnie line, based on the clothes Arnold Palmer wore in his heyday. The line has been created by Geoff Tait and Bobbie Pasternak, the guys who make Quagmire, a golf and lifestyle brand with the motto “Not fit for the fairway.” But somehow Tait and Pasternak have come up with a collection that really seems to fit Moore’s laid-back, iconoclastic look. As Tait, the designer of Quagmire and the newly licensed Arnold Palmer collection, said: “Truth is I built the line with Mr. Palmer’s style in mind. I did all of the research about what he wore back in the day, and it turned out to be exactly Ryan's style.”        Moore had been wearing what Tait calls, “a mishmash of clothing from his own wardrobe,” mostly non-golf brands. “Sorting through the archives, most of the pictures that I went through were of Mr. Palmer wearing cardigans much like Ryan likes to wear regularly.” The Arnie clothes are based on the iconic style of Palmer in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Cardigans are all cotton and the sweater crests are replicas of the Ryder Cup patch from the ’70s, Tait said. A striped cardigan is based on a sweater that Palmer wore in the ’60s. Polo shirts are in Palmer Performance Polyester, a fabric designed to be moisture-wicking, anti-bacterial, breathable, piling and wrinkle-resistant, and quick-drying. The ties are made of silk.   “We wanted him to stand out once in a while rocking the tie,” Tait said, “and the tie is actually really cool with the umbrella logo on it.”   Some of the new Arniewear shirts have a ’50s feel, with smaller collars and shorter plackets. Others show the ’60s influence with wider collars and a longer placket. The ’70s shirts sport contrast woven collars, in a 60-40 cotton-polyster blend.    “We made the collars a little stiffer, because Mr. Palmer requested a few shirts with some cotton and hard collars,” said Tait. “He wore a lot of those back in the day.”   Of  Moore’s reaction to having, for the first time, a brand on his back, Tait said, “He is a really nice guy and has the same kicked-back attitude as us. I think he fits the clothing pretty well, and to be honest, I'm happy he is not boring.”

Premier Golf Resorts 2012: Bandon Dunes Resort is the new No. 1

Twenty-four years after Golf Magazine began ranking the game’s greatest resorts, a true pioneer has reached the summit. Our new No. 1 resort in North America is Oregon’s Bandon Dunes, the realized vision of Mike Keiser. The golf purist dreamed of simple, perfect, public-access golf, with accommodations to match. According to the 7,252 votes cast at Golf.com, he delivered. Only one resort climbed the ladder to earn the coveted Platinum status for 2012-13, but it’s a stunner: the Four Seasons Resort Lana’i at Manele Bay in Hawaii. Newcomers populate the Gold and Silver categories, including newly gilded La Costa, in Carlsbad, Calif., fresh off a $50 million makeover, and the Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz., host of the Accenture Match Play Championship. Of course, many of us remain on tight budgets. Fortunately, every medal-winning resort offers some kind of deal or package. You can check out those bargains, winners by region, and category leaders — and visit our Eco-Friendly Hall of Fame, which features three properties newly honored with Green Awards. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort Bandon, Ore. 888-345-6008 bandondunes.com Our new No. 1 isn’t resting on its laurels. Fresh off the successful debut of its Doak/Urbina– designed Old Macdonald, Bandon is slated to open a 13-hole par-3 course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2012. Although Bandon’s inspired layouts, clifftop setting and walking-only policy have helped make it one of the world’s best golf experiences, the resort is definitely not a one-trick pony—it placed fourth in the Service category and in the top 12 in both Lodging and Food & Drink. Masters to look hypocritical in Woods's case

From NY Daily News: Augusta National and The Masters are about to try the look of hypocrisy on for size. There is no way Masters chairman Billy Payne is going to acknowledge any material on a Web site where the host is baring her breasts while staring provocatively into the camera. As a past Masters champion and honorary Augusta member, Woods can play each April until his golf game grows cobwebs. Unlike with the PGA Tour, there is no precedent for the Masters to rescind an invite of any participant because of behavior off the course and the tournament does...

Course of Style: Adidas to unveil its first "natural motion" golf shoes

The golf world is experimenting with "natural motion" footwear, as companies like TRUE Linkswear and Nike adopt golf shoe designs loosely based on the "five finger" concept that has swept the running and hiking fields. This approach brings the foot into closer contact with the ground and eliminates much of the superstructure of advanced athletic shoes. Ryan Moore and Tiger Woods have been early adaptors of this trend.   Now Adidas is introducing its own version, with two new models that play up the idea of "freedom and control" and "natural stability." Adams Golf Adidas Golf's new Puremotion golf shoes, left, and Crossflex.   The first, provisionally called Puremotion, is a highly technical golf shoe with an “anatomical shape” and spikeless sole. It features a wider, “web-shaped forefoot” that Adidas says provides a natural fit for comfort and performance. The idea here is that instead of being firmly locked into place, your toes have room to wiggle and grip down at key moments during the swing.   The second shoe is the Crossflex and it’s built on a lightweight running last—a shoemaker’s form shaped like a human foot. In lieu of spikes, it has "pods" and "zonal traction elements" for grip in various ground conditions. In other words, it's flexible, lightweight and spikeless.   These seem to be the buzzwords in golf footwear right now, along with breathable. Both models have Climaproof mesh uppers and carry a two-year waterproof guarantee.   Both shoes will be unveiled atthe PGA Merchandise show in Orlando, Fla., in two weeks. Adidas is not even sure what the final names will be or the exact price ($100 to $120) when they go on sale this summer, but one thing seems clear: like other hybrid and natural motion golf shoes, they can be worn on the street, in your kitchen and to the office on Friday, which for many men will be a welcome leap forward.

What would happen if Tiger won The Masters?

From ESPN.com: Tiger Woods is saying all the right things these days, but what if he won The Masters? Would that leave everyone speechless? How are we supposed to react then? It's possible, you know. From all accounts coming out of Orlando, Woods's game is as sharp as a sushi knife. It's "vintage" right now, according to John Cook, who's been playing with him lately. "I don't see anybody beating him." "He's killing it, absolutely killing it," Tour player Arjun Atwal told reporters in Orlando. "If he gets that putter going at all, he'll probably win."
